Some men experience even thinning throughout the vertex and crown area but hair remains thick in the horshoe pattern around the back of the head. This is called diffuse pattern alopecia (DPA). There is good news for those with DPA. Because their donor area is not affected by DHT, a hormone that causes hair loss, they are likely to be good candidates for a hair transplant. For those experiencing hair loss throughout the entire head including the back between the ears, then diffuse unpatterned alopecia (DUPA) may be the diagnosis. For those experiencing DUPA it is not recommended to get a hair transplant because hair from the donor area is unpredictable. Female Pattern Hair Loss
For many women, hair loss can be a result of illness, pregnancy, hormone changes or stress. For those affected by these conditions, hair will return over time. In some cases however, especially in women who are approaching 50, female pattern hair loss is the cause of thinning throughout the head. Unlike most men, women may retain their frontal hairline but thin throughout the vertex and crown areas. This is the result of genetics and can be corrected if hair in the donor area remains strong.
