I am a hair transplant physician who has been in practice for over 29 years, and I encourage you to consider my advice prior to your procedure.
The FUE (Follicular Unit Extraction) procedure is not the newest and most advanced procedure as it claims. Actually, the method that they are using today is one of the oldest technologies in the hair transplant industry.
Have you ever heard of "hair plugs"?
Hair plugs have been around since the beginning of hair transplants going back at least 60 years. In the old days, doctors used a 4 mm punch biopsy to remove bundles of hair from the back of your head. Then they would punch a hole on the top of your head and then "plug" it in, hence the term “plugs”. The FUE (Follicular Unit Extraction) procedure uses the same old method of extraction as hair plugs. The FUE (Follicular Unit Extraction) procedure uses a smaller punch (.09mm) biopsy instrument that is the only difference; however, it is the exact same concept. The original FUE (Follicular Unit Extraction) advertisements claim that it is scar less procedure. This is so far from the truth it is comical. Not only do you get scars but you get thousands of scars that appear as polka-dot holes through the back of your head (see photos above). Instead of one linear scar you get thousands of punch biopsy incision scars. These scars cause more problems with the blood supply and affecting the nerve supply. Many patients are seeking this procedure so they can shave their head afterwards. As you can see in the photos above, that shaving your head does not look good with this type of procedure. You should not be getting a hair transplant if you are planning on shaving your head anyways. You get a hair transplant so you do NOT have to shave your head. The amount of hair moved with the FUE (Follicular Unit Extraction) procedure is considerably less then a traditional linear scar hair transplant. Due to the method of extraction, many surgeons are forced to extract hair from areas that are not "safe" due to their location. Taking hair outside the safe (donor) zone that is not genetically immune to the hormone DHT will cause your transplanted hair to fall out in the future. Doctors do this because they cannot get enough donor hair from the safe zone due to their method of extraction. The FUE (Follicular Unit Extraction) procedure method to extract the hair destroys the donor tissue for future procedures, and there is a much higher level of graft transection as compared to the linear scar. This means to the patient that they are losing valuable donor hair that could have been used on the top of their head. In general the FUE (Follicular Unit Extraction) procedure takes much longer and is more painful due to the additional anesthesia that needs to be administered due to the length of the procedure. All FUE (Follicular Unit Extraction) procedure patients MUST shave the back of their head where a linear scar patient does not. The majority of the work that I do now is corrective hair surgery. I spend virtually every working day correcting FUE (Follicular Unit Extraction) procedures from around the world.
I am not saying that every patient should come to me. I am trying to help hair transplant consumers make an informed decision prior to making one of the biggest decisions of their life. When FUE (Follicular Unit Extraction) doctors stay in the safe zone their top yield will be 3,500-5,000 hairs, and this procedure could take up to two days. With the FUE (Follicular Unit Extraction) procedure you will get more scars, you will have more pain, your surgery time will be much longer and you will get way less hair and most importantly you will be destroying your donor hair for future surgeries!

FUE Disadvantages
- The entire back of your head must be shaved to harvest the donor.
- FUE stands for follicular unit extraction, which means a punch biopsy device is used to extract the follicle. The FUE is a similar method to the hair plug from 50 years ago.
- It is not scarless! It could give the donor area a "moth eaten" appearance (polka-dot scarred areas throughout the donor area). It is especially noticeable after 2 procedures.
- Donor hair is taken from outside of the safe zone so the newly transplanted hair is susceptible to falling out.
- The harvesting method used by the punch biopsy instrument (Manually, FUE (Follicular Unit Extraction) etc.), destroys the blood and nerve supply.
- There is a much higher chance of destroying the follicle through the harvesting method. There is a minimum of 25% destruction of donor tissue during the harvesting method.
- The length of the surgery time is much longer. Therefore much more anesthesia is needed throughout the process, so it tends to be much more painful than the strip method.
- The donor area is depleted more quickly and not as effectively used with FUE.
- The graft size is limited: the smaller the punch means the smaller the graft size; which means less hair and less density.
- In most cases the procedure is completely done by technicians, technicians remove the donor, which is illegal in every state in the US.
- Choosing FUE for your procedure does not guarantee naturalness or a quality result.
- FUE is a much more costly procedure!
